British TV is currently showing a series of adverts for Mercedes-Benz cars. They show Gottlieb Daimler looking stressed and tired. His housekeeper says to him in German ‘Herr Daimler, Sie arbeiten zuviel,’ (Herr Daimler, you work too much) and he replies ‘Ich will nur das Beste haben.’ (I will only have the best.)
The pronunciation of the German seems perfect and there is no reason why the voice-over should not be done by German native speakers, but I noticed one thing: the pronunciation of the name ‘Daimler’. I did not hear it under perfect laboratory conditions, but it seemed to me that even in the German sentence it was more like the English pronunciation Dame-ler than the German Dime-ler, or at least it was slurred.
