I am pleased to refer to two messages on Margaret Marks's interesting Transblawg.
Here she writes about the problems of communication by police using radios. Reading it I am reminded of the problems surrounding the introduction of SeaSpeak, a standardised language system for radio communication in English between merchant vessels with the intention of removing ambiguity and misunderstanding. Not surprisingly it was opposed strenuously by British merchant navy personnel. The comments to the message pick up an interesting language point, one that I have mentioned here.
And here she describes how judges deal with quoting bad language in court.
