The unintended meaning is so strong that it suggests "the Olympics" also means something else. (I decline to speculate what.)

I first came across this problem as a common mistake in Germany, where Rückseite literally means backside but is used to mean the back of an object. I wonder if it might be part of the greatly underestimated German influence on American English.
